The Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU) 10th Annual Take Flight 5k fundraiser will be on Saturday, May 27. This event raises money for Runway Park with 100 percent of the donations going toward new playground equipment. Last year’s race raised enough to add a picnic shelter, additional greenspace, and replace worn playground equipment. The goal this year is to raise the funds to add new playground equipment.
The Memorial Day weekend race will start with a short tribute to our fallen heroes. The Greenville Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol will post the colors and conduct a POW/MIA ceremony. The somber 24 notes of TAPS will be played by Stephen Goshorn prior to a moment of silence before running the flattest and most exciting race in the Southeast.
“The Take Flight 5k race is another way the Greenville Downtown Airport is able to raise awareness about aviation and raise money to support our Runway Park. The park is our gift to the city and is also our educational outreach arm for aviation,” said James D. Stephens, Airport Director.
Sign up, tell, or bring a friend now: https://runsignup.com/Race/SC/Greenville/TakeFlight5k. The first 50 veteran registrations will be free with proof of service.
Teams, costumes, and competition are welcome with prizes given to the fastest groups and runners. All are welcome to walk or run the 5k or one mile race.
About the Greenville Downtown Airport
The Greenville Downtown Airport is the busiest general aviation airport in South Carolina. GMU has served our community since 1928 and continues that service today. Our Community Corridor is a window for children and families to take in aviation at Runway Park, eat at Runway Café, learn military history at the MHCC museum, or just play a round at Take Off Mini Golf.
