In 100 words or less, define what leadership means to you?
Leadership, to me, is about inspiring and empowering others to achieve their best. Leadership is not just about directing but also about nurturing potential, building trust, and creating a shared sense of purpose and community.
It’s about being authentic, listening actively, and fostering a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued. A great leader leads by example, demonstrating integrity, resilience, and a commitment to growth. They understand the importance of empathy and adaptability, guiding their team through challenges with a clear vision and unwavering support.
How has the idea of leadership changed over the years of your career?
Initially, I saw leadership as being about authority and making decisions. Over the years, I’ve come to value the trust placed in me to set a vision for the team and to create a culture of empowerment.
In your opinion, are certain people born natural leaders or can you train someone to be a great leader?
While some people may have natural leadership qualities, I believe anyone can be trained to be a great leader. Leadership isn’t just about inherent traits; it’s about commitment to personal growth and dedication to empowering those around you.
What is the difference between a boss and a leader? Are they interchangeable?
The difference between a boss and a leader lies in their approach and influence. A boss typically concentrates on authority, delivering commands, and retaining control. Conversely, a leader inspires, motivates, and empowers the team to accomplish shared goals. They promote growth, listen attentively, and prioritize a collaborative atmosphere.
While a boss may rely on their position, a leader earns respect through their actions and empathy. They are not interchangeable as real leadership extends beyond task management—it’s about nurturing potential and creating a positive, inclusive culture.
What is the biggest attribute that a leader needs?
I believe vision is an important attribute of a leader. Vision provides direction and purpose, inspiring the team to work towards a common goal. It helps in setting clear, ambitious objectives and motivates others to strive for excellence. Leaders with vision can see beyond immediate challenges, foreseeing future opportunities and guiding their teams through changes. This forward-thinking approach encourages innovation, resilience, and a sense of shared purpose, driving the team to achieve remarkable outcomes.
