Goodwyn Mills Cawood moves to new office in Unity Park

Local architecture and engineering firm Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) has officially settled into their new office space in downtown Greenville. The newly-renovated building, designed by GMC, sits along the Swamp Rabbit Trail in Unity Park, one of the City of Greenville’s newest community attractions.

“As we celebrate our 15-year anniversary in Greenville, our 40 local team members are incredibly excited to make the move to Unity Park,” GMC Executive Vice President Kevin Laird said. “The location and design of our new office prepares us for our continued growth in Greenville, especially with access to so many quality-of-life amenities for our team, which helps tremendously with recruiting talent.”

When selecting the location and designing the office, being located in the middle of the 60-acre park certainly played a factor.

“This was such a unique opportunity to create a collaborative work space that really fits who we are. At our core, we believe in ‘building communities,’ and being in the center of the new park allows us to be an integral part of a growing and thriving Greenville,” GMC Vice President of Architecture Marc Warren said. “We spend so much time together at work and with our coworkers; it was important for us to provide our people with a beautiful place to come every day that blurs the lines between work and play.”

The 10,000-square-foot existing brick warehouse was built in the 1940s as part of an industrial area just west of downtown Greenville. In designing the office, GMC’s architectural team looked to bring new life into the 80-year-old building by exposing the brick, structural elements and wood roof deck while creating a 21st century work environment that includes only six individual offices and a large, open plan studio.

The center of the roof was popped up to create a clerestory, letting more natural light into the center of the space. The studio faces the Reedy River and park and includes several spaces for collaboration, including four conference rooms varying in size for two to 20 people.

The office features a large, open plan studio with only six individual offices to promote collaboration.

This new office provides opportunities for GMC’s team to enjoy the park throughout the day as well. They incorporated a shaded outdoor conference space overlooking the river to hold meetings or serve as a lunch spot, a green area to host events or to play games on Friday afternoons and a shower facility inside so that people can ride their bikes to work or go for a walk or run any time throughout the day.

“The new GMC Greenville office was designed around our people at the forefront of every decision we made,” Warren said.

The address of GMC’s new office is 117 Welborn Street, Greenville, South Carolina.
